The reason I'm bringing Master Controller into it is that it's entirely possible that the baby's gender is an open question until I ask "what do I have?", and the game returns a gender where one didn't exist before. So the best explanation I can come up with that incorporates this is that gender is determined at the time of a successful "Try for Baby", but the apples/watermelon thing provides a small chance to change the gender if your Sim is munching on the proper fruit at the proper time. Last attempt showed that it's a boy at 0 hours into the pregnancy. I can have my Sims do the "Try for Baby" thing, get the little lullaby and immediately see the baby's gender. My observations call this into question, but I am also using Master Controller, and am not sure whether this is affecting what I'm seeing. The traditional view seems to be that gender is determined somewhere around the time of the switch to maternity clothing and the apples/watermelon thing adds a small percentage to the "roll" to decide whether you get a boy or girl, which is otherwise a 50-50 proposition. Got a small debate going on in regarding the game's pregnancy and gender-selection mechanics.
